Detoxing your Body, your Mind, and your Life

Anyone who has ever studied human biology knows how intricate our body’s are. Every second of the day we go through an amazing amount of checks and balances to remain in homeostasis. We are an unbelievably complex organism! It’s important to note that while we look at each of the body’s natural detox systems every change and decision we make impacts us further than just one particular system. Making just one change can benefit our whole bodies. But why stop there? You can make many simple changes and reap all of the benefits, right!

Perhaps one of the easiest changes we can make is to increase the amount of water we drink. Water makes up about 60% of the human body, is an essential element of every bodily function and is an amazing detox tool. As you would imagine much of the water we drink is eliminated through our urine. If you recall the urinary system is on the list of our detox systems. The head honchos in the urinary system are our kidneys and, as I’m sure you’ve picked up by now, regulate the balance of water in our bodies. If you’ve ever had a day where you didn’t drink as much water as you wanted and because of that went to the bathroom far less than you normally would or vice versa, you can thank your kidneys for controlling that. Our kidneys also keep track of our electrolyte balance which are another key element for proper cell function. Once the kidneys have made the adjustments, and picked up some waste, the urine is transported to the bladder and eventually out of our bodies.

But the kidney’s job doesn’t stop with urine. Blood. Our little kidney’s, that are about the size of your fist, filter roughly five hundred gallons of blood in a twenty-four hour time period. They pick up toxins that have been passed along in some shape or form from all the other systems in the bloodstream, so it’s important to keep the kidneys running smoothly! Toxins can put stress on the kidney’s and negatively impact their function and given what preceded this would not be a good thing for the rest of your body! Besides the environmental toxins we face on a daily basis like pesticides, heavy metals like mercury and lead, prescription drugs, it’s important to minimize alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol can contain pesticides, heavy metals along with other harmful additives and can deplete minerals. It’s also a diuretic, which can wreak havoc on your kidney’s ability to regulate water levels. Drinking more water and eating organic fruits and vegetables is a great start to keeping your kidneys healthy.

I’m a huge fan of taking small steps with a larger goal in mind and drinking more water should be high on the list. Go ahead and reach for tall glass of water but please be sure it’s been filtered and not stored in plastic container. You may have heard of the dangerous chemicals, called endocrine disruptors, that leak into bottled water from the plastic and can impact your hormone balance- not good. We use a Brita filter in our home but once the water is filtered we pour it into multiple glass containers which not only look better but don’t leak toxic chemicals into our water! Keep sipping water throughout the day but try to get through eight glasses as a minimum. You may make a couple of extra trips to the bathroom but you’ll be doing your body a world of good.

While I am an absolute firm believer that proper nutritional supplementation can help us in so many ways it’s important to understand that they’re called supplements for a reason, they are meant to supplement your daily lifestyle and hopefully you’ve read some information here and have started incorporating some healthy and detox practices in your life. The right supplements can absolutely have a positive impact on your body by helping it’s natural systems. But let’s take a closer look at these systems your body uses on its own, on an everyday basis, on a constant second to second basis, that help us cleanse and detox.

The body’s natural detox systems are generally classified in five systems:

1) Digestive
2) Urinary
3) Respiratory
4) Dermal
5) Lymphatic

Many detox products, diets and plans emphasis the digestive system. In speaking to a client recently he asked why so much emphasis was put on the digestive system, he wanted to know what was impacted by your digestive system. It’s a simple answer, everything! It’s the digestive system that processes food so our bodies can absorb the water, minerals and nutrients and then eliminates the waste. It starts in the mouth then proceeds to the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (which is commonly called the colon) and the finally the anus and includes your liver, gallbladder and pancreas in the process. If you were to unfold and lay flat your gastrointestinal tract it would have a surface area that’s roughly two hundred times the surface area of your skin. Fun fact isn’t it. Two hundred times! That is a whole lot of surface area that can absorb and eliminate toxins.

Most, in fact ninety percent of the nutrients are absorbed from the small intestine. The left over materials are then sent to the colon. This is where your body is going to absorb the rest of the good stuff and begin forming the waste that you’re going to hopefully eliminate rapidly and regularly. So, if this is where your body absorbs all of the nutrients it’s going to use to fuel the rest of your body and that eliminates a large portion of the toxins you’ve ingested you want to make sure that this system is kept healthy and running as smoothly as possible.

Many of us have a unhealthy eating habits that directly impacts our digestive health. We eat too much but not enough nutrient rich foods. We’re missing out on nutrients, fiber, and enzymes that are crucial for digestive health. We’re ingesting antibiotics, drugs, refined foods, processed foods, unhealthy fats and many of us are dehydrated and stressed out which absolutely impacts our health.

Let’s take a look at some things we can do to help us out. Start by drinking more water- and no I didn’t say a sports drink, coffee or soda, I said water! At the very least eight cups a day but not all at the same time. If you’ve been falling short during the day don’t try to chug down a few glasses all at once, most of that won’t be absorbed by your body. Also, don’t drink to much water with a meal. Sounds strange right? But if you drink too much fluid while you eat you’re going to dilute the stomach acids that help break down your food and this can lead to a whole host of problems. Try to stay away from the bad foods we’ve talked about and hit the veggie area of your grocery store, buy organic fruits and veggies and eat as many of those raw as you can. This way you won’t destroy many of the enzymes and nutrients. You’ll also benefit from the fiber found in the veggies. SoCal Cleanse® is developing a product that will combine most of these making it an easy addition. Take a probiotic supplement and an enzyme supplement to help digest your other foods and keep your healthy bacteria alive and well! Remember to chew your food well to help your digestive system out down the line.

Last but not least, something I am a huge supporter of- exercise! You’ll get all of the systems moving and grooving, you’ll burn fat, increase skeletal muscle, and it will help you relax by taking away stress. Many detox plans and diets will just glaze over fitness and exercise but I can’t stress the importance of it and you will continue to see exercise tips and information here. Remember how important anything you put into your body truly is and the multiple impacts it can have.

I’ve spent a great deal of time in highly polluted cities. Places like Mexico City where they have “pollution days” when they’re forced to close schools because of how bad the air pollution gets. Trust me, pollution days are not as fun as snow days. Los Angeles holds the title for the most polluted city in the United States. I love it here but believe me, you can tell. When you fly into these cities you go through a brown layer and you can immediately smell the fumes, pretty shocking. What’s even more shocking is that its been proven that the air quality inside your home, right now, is 2-5 times more polluted than the air outside and in some cases 100 times worse!

You may suspect some indoor air pollution as outdoor air pollution that comes in through your windows and doors and in some cases you’d be right, but where does the rest come from? Everyday items you have in your home and office can off-gas chemicals contributing to the poor air quality. The items can range from the more obvious like tobacco smoke and dust to the less likely like appliances, paints, carpets, furniture which can contain formaldehyde and flame retardants, fax machines, printers, copiers, candles, and even the building materials themselves.

It’s surprising isn’t it? You would think there would be some sort of legislation or methodologies in place to protect us from purchasing and living with harmful chemicals. There are eighty thousand chemical substances that are used in industry and of this eighty thousand guess how many have actually been studied for their effects on living organisms? Three thousand. Sure some chemicals have been banned by the U.S. because of the hazards they pose but many of theses chemicals are sitting in your home right now anyway. We’re living in a time of a global economy where manufactures get their parts and pieces from all over the world to create one product. Places where the use of many of the banned chemicals here is everyday practice there. And no, manufacturers are not required to know what is exactly in the parts that they’re sourcing elsewhere. It’s scary business.

Not only is it scary but it’s frustrating. Many new homes and office buildings are more airtight than ever in an effort to become more energy efficient and that only compounds the indoor air quality problem because less fresh air can get in and more harmful chemicals are concentrated in your living and working space. So what can you do? First, buy an air purifier that uses a HEPA filter or buy a few to place throughout your home or business. We have a good one that Honeywell makes in our bedroom. We also switched out the filter for our central heat and air and bought a Filtrite filter that 3M makes. Within a day of running each we noticed a huge difference. Make sure your ducts are cleaned every once and awhile, even with a filter they can collect toxins over time. Try to buy natural or organic furnishings and carpeting. There’s been an explosion recently of “green” and organic home furnishing stores. Some of the more readily available and granted, cheaper, furniture out there is made form particleboard which releases formaldehyde a very toxic chemical. Many of the chemicals used to treat the fabrics on your upholstery are off-gassed and absorbed by your skin and lungs. Put plants in your home! Trees and plants are our planet’s lungs and can help reduce the pollution in your home not to mention they give of fresh oxygen. For those of you living in large cities or if you have a long commute it would also be beneficial to use a small personal air cleaner in your car. You can buy a plug converter that will work with your lighter plug in your car. A new study done by USC found that up to half of a Los Angeles resident’s exposure to to harmful air pollution occurs while we’re in our vehicles. If you’re like me and thought that having the windows up and running the air on recirculate beat the pollution well, bad news. The research team found only “modest’ reduction of particulate exposure and just about no reduction of most gaseous pollutants.

Obviously it’s a good idea to do your best to improve the air you’re breathing and exposed to and those are some easy solutions to get you on your way. Using natural and organic cleaners in your home will also help and again there are more options out there right now than ever before. It’s easy to get discouraged when you begin to learn how toxic our bodies and world can and have become. Luckily there are easy and effective choices you can make today to fight back. You might feel overwhelmed by all of the information and by all of the changes and choices you can make. It’s our nature to get comfortable with what we know. We all start somewhere so start with one change and see how easy it is to incorporate in your life. I’ve found it can snowball fairly quickly when you see and feel the results.

Mental obstacles aside there are some easy choices you can make to help you feel comfortable in a gym. Choose a gym that’s right for you. It doesn’t cost a dime to take a guided tour of gyms in your area. You will be escorted around the gym by a gym staffer who will answer any question you might have. You’ll be able to get the lay of the land, look at the equipment and get an overall vibe. There are a lot of woman out there that don’t like working out in the same gym as men, no problem! The options for all woman gyms have exploded in recent years. My wife belongs to one. I am not aloud to go past the threshold and she loves it! For the most part the large chains do a good job making the gym appealing to a wide variety of people but you may find a smaller boutique gym in your area that’s a perfect fit. Ideally you’ll be at your gym for multiple days a week so make sure you make a good choice but that’s no excuse not to muster up the drive and join one soon!

Another deterrent for many is the gym equipment. Without fail, every time I’m at the gym I see someone using machines improperly and I’m not surprised, some of the machines can be difficult to use for an advanced person- I see them making mistakes too. The little diagram on the machine can be no help at all. Again, everyone has to learn how to use these things properly so take the time to do this. If you haven’t heard it before- FORM is the absolute king in the gym. Don’t worry about the weight you’re using or the speed or anything else until you have mastered the form for any exercise. If your form is not right you are cheating yourself out of results and risking injury. There are a couple things you can do to learn the equipment and make sure you have the right form. The best one is to use a personal trainer. These guys and gals have been trained and certified to help you! What I suggest is to use the free session they will most likely give you when you join. If you’re already a member buy a session. When you meet the trainer tell them upfront that you’d like to learn how to use the machines or equipment. Take the hour and make a round of the gym, watch how they set everything up, listen to them about form. If you enjoyed that and can afford to keep seeing your trainer then by all means keep it up! Trainers should take your body data and design a custom work out plan for you and keep you on top of it. If you’re ever working without a trainer and you’re having problems with a machine or exercise you can always grab another one at the front desk for a few minutes to ask if you’re doing it right, they should be happy to help.

If you have a friend that wants to work out also go together. Having the extra support can a tremendous benefit. Having a familiar face with you makes going to the gym easier but be sure make rules with each other. Tell them that you are serious about doing this and that means no cell phones, no drawn out conversation- you can still gossip but do so in small doses between sets! I’ve spoken to many people who started going to the gym with a friend and eventually, as they became familiar with their surroundings, they had no qualms to go by themselves.

Another tip to getting comfortable in the gym is the clothes. I think this more valuable for the woman out there than the guys but a little style never hurt anyone! You no doubt have those favorite items of clothing. You need to find a workout outfit or two that you really think is cute, if that means a little shopping trip then I’m sure you can make it happen. So get out there shop for some things you enjoy wearing, join the right gym for you (yes, there is one out there for you!), take your time to learn the equipment ad proper form and soon you’ll be excited to go to the gym and not threatened or intimidated! The sooner you do this the sooner you can enjoy the detox, fitness, and physical benefits!

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve spoken to who feel threatened and anxious when it comes to walking into a gym. For some it stops them from joining a gym. For others it stops them from going. I’ve known people who belong to a gym, go in for a workout spend five minutes walking around and get so psyched out by the other people they turn around and go home. It’s not just gyms but any fitness class, yoga, spinning, boot camp, etc. You walk in one of these places and you zero in on the young woman and guys wearing skimpy workout clothes with muscles you didn’t even know existed. Pretty intimidating, right? I understand, but when the fears and anxiety comes between you and your health, fitness and detox goals it’s time for a change.

One thing you really need to understand is that everyone starts somewhere. I can guarantee you that the woman over there with amazing flat abs or the guy over there bench pressing a house had to work very, very hard. Lets put this in perspective. Have you ever been watching television or reading a magazine and a model or actor is talking about not working out, that they’re just naturally the way they look? Guess what… I’ve seen some of these very same models and actors in gyms in Los Angeles, New York, or Miami red-faced, sweating buckets and working extremely hard to get their “natural” bodies. Sure, genetics plays a role with some but the work and dedication is the same. Everyone at a gym is at a different fitness and health level but everyone is working toward similar goals so the fact that you’re there and trying your best garners respect from even the most experienced gym rat. I’ve seen countless unlikely friendships form in gyms between people who probably don’t hang out outside of the gym but because they’re in there working toward the same thing they respect each other.

No one likes to feel as though they’re being judged. For many going to the gym means facing your insecurities head on so it’s no wonder we can feel scrutinized and judged, even if it’s all in our head. This is my “Police Line Up” analogy. You feel like you’re being lined up against the wall and someone behind the glass can see you, all of you, but you don’t see them, you don’t know what they’re looking at and you don’t know what they’re thinking. All of your imperfections and weaknesses are there on display. Let me be the one that smashes the glass and tells you what’s really going on. First, you well know by now that you are your own worst enemy. You’re most critical to you. No one on the face of this planet knows you like you know you, no one, not your boyfriend/girlfriend, wife/husband, mother/father… no one. I can tell you people do not see you the same way you see yourself and for many that is a relief! Going easy on yourself is also one of the hardest lessons to learn. I can’t stress enough how people who are in a gym have a tremendous respect for anyone else there. No one knows the dedication and work it takes to be there more than they do and will be among the least judgmental. Not that young woman over there in incredible shape you say? Let me tell you something else then. The so called “beautiful people” out there are also some of the most insecure. I can’t refer you to a study about this but I’m telling you from firsthand experience in Los Angeles seeing and working with people who, you and I would think, would not have an insecure bone in their body. Next time you are getting the best of yourself it helps to remember that no one is having malicious thoughts about the way you look or the weight you’re lifting or how fast you’re going on the elliptical. Chances are everyone in the gym is feeling the same way you are so don’t psyche yourself out! If you get in there on a consistent basis you will be looking and feeling great and becoming more comfortable with those around you.

As you flip through The Detox Blog you’ll find the common theme that detoxing should really be a lifestyle. It’s rare for a nutritional supplement company to stress a lifestyle approach. Most companies want you to believe there is a magic pill that will make your dreams come true without any extra work on your part, oh, and it will all happen fast! I really think it’d important to remember that nutritional supplements are just that, a supplement to your everyday life. While I believe that nutritional supplements, at least the right ones, should be an absolute important piece of your lifestyle, there are other elements that need come together. It’s a complimentary approach where each element will compliment and feed off the others. The four basic elements are nutrition, supplementation, exercise and spirit. I’m sure you’ll hear about these four elements from me again and again, and I’ll talk about each as the blog progresses.

Exercise is important for a good detox program for a few reasons. When you exercise you breathe deeply which is a good thing as long as you’re not exercising next to a busy road or smokestacks, you don’t want to breathe in more toxins than you’re getting rid of! When you breathe you help oxygenate the cells which can help them do their jobs, one being detoxifying. Your lungs also expel carbon dioxide, a natural by product a functioning body. Deep breathing and physical activity also help stimulate your lymphatic system which has no pump system so it relies on physical activity to move throughout your system. Your lymph fluid moves around your body collecting toxins and other harmful waste products to carry away so a strong flow is a good thing. Hopefully you’re sweating at least some when you exercise because sweat can remove toxins by carrying them to the surface of your skin. When you exercise on a regular basis you can reduce your body fat. Fat is where the majority of our toxins are stored. When the fat starts to go away you will release toxins back into your system so it’s very important those toxins get flushed out of your system once and for all- that’s when the other elements of the detox lifestyle kick in such as a good herbal detox supplement and organic foods. Proper nutrition, supplementation, and further exercise will help you drop the pounds and the toxins.

It’s important to know how to exercise properly. I’ve trained many people who didn’t know the first thing about working out and that’s ok, that’s why they’re personal trainers out there! Joining a gym can be a daunting proposition but trainers are professionals who will teach you proper techniques and practices which are very worthwhile. You can do more damage than good if you exercise improperly. Even if you only want to work out at home or outdoors I suggest meeting with a trainer who can help you design a program for your needs. Working out today is not just pumping iron and running! You can incorporate many different practices into your lifestyle. Yoga, for instance is a fantastic detox workout. Many of the poses involve twisting and turning which massages your internal organs which helps the detox process. A gym membership can give you access to their classes so you can try different things and find what you like.

Part 1 of Organic: Why You Should Switch talked about the importance of switching to organic produce, in part 2 I’ll give you a few reasons why you should switch to organic meats and dairy. One thing to remember, and you’ll learn more through The Detox Blog, is that large portions of animal meats and dairy products like milk and cheese are not ideal foods, even when organic, for the detox lifestyle. I’m not saying cut these out of your diet completely but I definitely suggest scaling back and turning toward more plant sources for the same nutrients. I’ll be the first to tell you I still enjoy a good steak- organic of course.

As you’ve probably guessed by now the main reason for switching to organic meat and dairy is the toxic load that non organic products carry. Organic regulations ban the use of hormones, antibiotics, and of course pesticides. Pesticides in meat? You bet. Feed grown with pesticides are consumed by the animals which store these chemicals in its tissues which end up on the consumer’s plate. Antibiotics are widely and heavily used to control disease outbreaks and hormones like rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) are used to increase milk production while others increase size. Residue from all of the chemicals, just like the pesticides, end up on our tables and in our bodies. There’s a bigger picture. Here’s another quote from the EPA:

“Antibiotics, pesticides, and hormones are organic compounds which are used in animal feeding operations and may pose risks if they enter the environment. For example, chronic toxicity may result from low-level discharges of antibiotics and pesticides. Estrogen hormones have been implicated in the reduction in sperm counts among Western men (Sharpe and Skakkebaek, 1993) and reproductive disorders in a variety of wildlife (Colburn et al., 1993). Other sources of antibiotics and hormones include municipal wastewaters, septic tank leachate, and runoff from land-applied sewage sludge. Sources of pesticides include crop runoff and urban runoff.”

We are beginning to see residue from these chemicals in our rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs and soil. Buying organic will not only limit your exposure to these toxins directly but there’s an indirect advantage as well. Organic food producers have a decreased reliance on nonrenewable resources. They promote soil sustainability by using natural fertilizers, crop rotation which can minimize nutrient loss. You’ll also help to decrease the amount of pollution, like the dangerous chemical runoff discussed above, and who wants antibiotics in our tap water? Oh and another thing, just with vegetables and fruits you’ll also notice that organic meats and dairy taste better! I know I keep talking about how much better organic tastes but it’s true. Is it worth the extra cost? This is your health and well being we’re talking about. This is for the health and well being of our children who are just as exposed if not more at risk than we are. This is for the health of our planet. So, yes… it’s worth it.

We’ve decided to take our company, SoCal Cleanse®, green. We’ve started the process and methodologies that will dramatically decrease our company’s carbon footprint. More on that to come. In the spirit of going green we recently screened Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. One of the things that struck people about this documentary is the way it graphically shows true scientific data. It doesn’t matter what side of the political fence you’re on, it’s hard not to walk away amazed and inspired. Not only to you get the charts of convincing data but you get the pictures- the pictures of glaciers melting, the pictures of dead reefs, the pictures of how the CO2 and other chemicals have affected our planet right there in front of our faces, undeniable. I liked how it appeals to common sense. You can stack experts on both of side of any debate these days but some things just make sense. We all don’t have to be doctors and scientists to appreciate or understand a good point.

What does any of that have to do with detox you ask? Everything. For billions of Earth had it’s own system in place to keep things stable, the natural cycle of checks and balances… until the Industrial Revolution. With so much in so little time the Earth is reeling from it’s effects. If these toxins are doing this to the Earth what do you think they’re doing to our bodies? For thousands and thousands of years humans have had their own natural ability to cleanse and detoxify itself from impurities and toxins. Our bodies knew what toxins were out there and had developed it’s own system to counteract those toxins. Enter the Industrial Revolution. Millions of new toxins are introduced to the world and our bodies in a very, very short time and our bodies don’t know what to do with all of these new toxins so it stores many of them with negative affects. Just like the Earth our bodies could use a little help these days.

The Earth + Body connection is a strong one. Many choices we can make in today’s world not only benefit our bodies but the Earth as well which in turn furthers the well being of our bodies. You’ve already read a little bit about pesticides and what they can do to our bodies and the land. There will be more tips and info about the detox lifestyle that have a strong upside for our planet as well as our bodies. You can be sure that SoCal Cleanse® is committed to detoxing our planet as we are to you.

Organic food is such a big deal I have to split this up into two parts. We’ll talk about produce here and part two will talk about meats and dairy. You’ve seen the word at the grocery store but do you really understand what organic is all about? What’s the big deal, it all looks the same and organic is even more expensive so why make the change? Toxins, that’s why. Pesticides, herbicides, hormones, massive amount of chemicals and genetically modified foods that’s why! Organic crops are grown without the use of pesticides, genetically modified seeds, preservatives, colorings, flavorings or any other chemical enhancement. That’s why buying organic as much as possible is at the core of any solid detox diet. By diet I’m not talking about a silly fad diet, I’m simply speaking of what you consume on a daily basis and what you’re consuming today is a lot different than it used to be.

A hundred or a hundred and fifty years ago is not very long in the scheme of world history. Back then our ancestors were limited to what they could eat but not only were the prices better but the food was fresh. Their food had to come from their immediate surrounding area. The time it took for a potato or a head of lettuce to go from the ground to your stomach was minimal. It was mostly organic produce grown in rich soil kept rich by manure, mulching and crop rotation. Before long, cities grew and with urbanization new farming, transportation and storage techniques came too. The use of pesticides and other manmade chemicals became standard practice and today 1.2 billion pounds of pesticides are used in the U.S. alone! Would you like some nutrients with your chemicals? Sorry, can’t help you. Those very same pesticides have stripped the soil of vitamins and minerals. Take a cup of spinach from 1950, to get the same amount of vitamins and minerals from that one cup today is impossible- you’ll need to eat up to 20 cups. The EPA says it best, “By their very nature, most pesticides create some risk of harm- Pesticides can cause harm to humans, animals, or the environment because they were designed to kill or otherwise adversely affect living organisms.” Do you know what your body does with these chemicals? Nothing, because many of them can’t be broken down, so your body stores them in your fat deposits, other body tissues and organs. Over time these chemicals continue to build up. If you were to run a test on your body fat right now it is 100% guaranteed that you would find an array of these harmful chemicals. Chronic exposure of pesticides may cause deterioration of organs and nervous system, cancer, or alterations in the reproductive system. The silver lining is that those factors are largely influenced by your exposure to the chemicals.

So let’s start to limit your exposure, sound good? Not only does it sound good but it tastes good! When you begin buying organic the first thing you’ll notice is the wonderful tastes! This is how fruits and veggies are meant to be. It’s almost as if you can taste how wholesome they are. No, your taste buds are not tricking you, many organic foods are proven to contain higher levels of nutrients including antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately you can’t just buy the non-organic varieties and scrub them down to get rid of the toxins. Some of these pesticides are designed to bond with the surface of the product while others are absorbed by the product. There’s been a surge of organic product demand which is good for many reasons, namely more variety and cheaper prices. But yes, buying organic will cost you a little extra still but while that may be hard to swallow think of what else you’re swallowing if you don’t.

Detoxing has been around for a very long time but only recently have more and more people started asking, “what is it?” and “should I detox?”. Detoxing is certainly on the cusp of an explosion. It just makes sense. It’s a lifestyle that encompasses what you eat, what you drink, your physical activity and your mind, emotions and spirit. It’s something that can have a tremendous impact on your health and on your life. But don’t worry you’re not running away to join a cult, you’re not going to be a social outcast, or subscribing to something difficult to do. Detox has been around for quite some time and it’s only getting easier and easier to make some simple changes in your life that will make a big impact. Like with anything it’s natural to a skeptic but when you start to learn more about detoxing and eventually start a detox program yourself you’re going to be pleasantly surprised and then you might be a little angry because you didn’t know about this sooner.

But what is “detox” and who are you, you ask? Let’s get “me” out of the way. Instead of going on and on about myself just click on the “About” page to learn more about me. Now we can get to the good stuff. Detox has a simple underlying message: In today’s world and in your everyday life we are bombarded with harmful pollutants and chemicals which your body doesn’t know what to do with. They aren’t nutrients, they can’t be broken down so your body ends up storing these toxins anywhere they can usually in your body fat, organs and other tissues. Over time these toxins continue to build up eventually making YOU toxic. These high levels of toxicity can affect your health, physical appearance, and emotional well-being. Let’s be clear, when I say toxins are found in your everyday life I mean it. Toxins are in the air, water, food, your home, beauty products, plastics, clothes…everywhere. It’s impossible to live in the modern world and not be exposed to toxins but there is good news. We also live in a time where we can facilitate an excellent defense. The healthy options are out there right now and only growing. When you detox your goal is to eliminate as many and as much of these toxins from your body and daily life as possible.

Don’t worry, this blog is going to go into much more detail and get very specific. You’ll get tips and information covering everything from diet and exercise to detoxing your home and even detoxing our planet. There’s only one you and one Earth and it’s easier than you think to take care of both.
